One way students can test and get a real feel for their career of choice is through internships.
Marcia Jones is the Coordinator for Work-Based Learning in the Employment and Career Services division of Lorain County Community College.
Jones works with students, instructors, and employers to help match career seekers to positions in the form of paid internships and co-ops.
"Some fields, such as computer science and engineering, internships are almost required," Jones said.
According to Job Outlook 2005 Student Version, a publication put out by The National Association of Colleges and Employers (NACE), employers are looking for candidates with some kind of work-education experience.
"Work-Based Learning has given me a very good foundation and I encourage everyone I talk to that is currently going to school …to consider an internship," Ryan Spikowski wrote.
He is a former LCCC student who is now a product specialist for Numatics Motion Control.
One way Jones helps students connect with internships is through Clevelandintern.net. This is a website that lists opportunities designed for students interested in obtaining
real-world job skills and experience. The site also has articles that student may find to be helpful in learning how to prepare for an internship and ultimately a job such as dress codes, resumes, and work ethics.
A second way students can connect with internships is through the College360 program.
This is a brain child of the Northeastern Ohio Consortium of Higher Education, or NOCHE, that serves as a networking tool to entice students to stay in northeastern Ohio . Internships are listed under the "work" tab. There are links to internship programs.
Students can explore the option of internships and co-ops by contacting the LCCC Employment and Career Services at (440) 366-4076.
