LCCC students must register to vote by Oct. 10 in order to be eligible for the 2006 November elections.
The general elections in Ohio are scheduled for Nov. 7
between 6:30 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. All voters must have registered at least 30 days prior to that vote.
Kathleen Head, coordinator of the Early Childhood Academic Program, feels that it is important for students to be politically active.
"It's important for students to get out and vote because elected officials will affect their future jobs, especially those students entering the field of education." She said. "Students seem to be getting younger and younger, and it's important for them to get informed about the candidates that are out there."
Gloria Torrence from the Citizen's Committee of Ohio was on campus last week to help students register to vote and to collect signatures for petitions for ballot initiatives.
"We have people sign the petitions to get the issues on the ballots to be voted on," Torrence said, "When you vote you are voicing your opinion, but when you don't vote you don't get a voice."
Torrence was one of three signature collectors for petitions. The issues they were seeking signatures for were Smoke Less Ohio, a smoking ban, and Community Defense, which will create a law that says strip clubs have to be closed at 12 a.m. in order to reduce crime.
Voters may register at public libraries, public high schools or vocational schools, the office of any deputy register of the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles, county treasurer's offices, the office of the Secretary of State or any of the 88 county boards of elections, and offices of designated agencies that provide public assistance or disability programs.
Voters may also download a voter registration form or request one to be mailed to them by logging on to the Secretary of State's web site at www.sos.state.oh.us.
In order to be eligible to vote, you must be a U.S. citizen, at least 18 years-old by election day, a resident of Ohio for at least 30 days before the election, must not be currently imprisoned for a felony conviction, must not have been declared incompetent  for voting purposes by a probate court, and must not have been permanently disfranchised for violations of the election laws.
Once registered, the county board of elections will mail you a confirmation notice that will identify the location from which you may vote.
For more information on voting, absentee ballots and provisional voting, you may call toll free at 1-877-767-6446or log on to w.sos.state.oh.us.
