Last Friday, a student was punched in the head by his fellow classmate. He responded to this by kicking his attacker in the stomach. No police report was filed however. In fact, the two resolved the conflict with a handshake and a laugh. These students, after all, are not violent criminals; they are members of the ACF (All Combat Forms) Club at Lorain County Community College.
"Basically, it's a mixed martial arts club," Aaron Weaver, president of the ACF, said. "We do striking, grappling and submissions combined."
"People come down," Weaver continued, "and we work on whatever you want to work on. If you want to work on striking, we'll do that. If you want to work on wrestling or submission, or if you want to work on both at the same time, it's up to you."
Members of the ACF normally meet at the gym on Fridays from 4:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. They often attract the attention of their fellow gym goers. Basketball players may catch a glimpse of them throwing kicks at each other, and runners on the indoor track may look down and see Marines practicing submission holds. Many people have expressed interest in joining the new club, which currently has about 20 members.
"I'd definitely be interested in the boxing," Sherman Ward, an LCCC student and gym goer, said.
But to anyone interested in joining the club, they should not expect to see Brad Pitt or any other Project Mayhem members any time soon. Weaver said that the club presents a very safe and controlled atmosphere.
"We have mandatory gear that you have to wear, depending on what you're doing," Weaver said. "As far as techniques: no elbows, knees, flying knees or anything like that. We don't want to kill anyone or knock them out."
