Daniel Barnicle resigned from his position as President of Student Senate at Lorain County Community College, exactly eight days after he was nearly impeached.
On Nov. 1, during the Student Senate meeting at LCCC, it was announced that a petition to impeach Barnicle had been removed.
Two months of heated tensions among the senate members caused at least half of the members of the Student Senate members to agree to impeach Barnicle.
The downward spiral started with turmoil over the September 11 Memorial Service.
Things got mixed up with three different programs being handed out to the senators, the speakers, and the guests in attendance, Barnicle said.
According to Barnicle, the allegations against him have been mounting since the September memorial service and finally culminated into the events of the past couple weeks.
Complaints received from students and some senators added up to a considerable number of pages.
The senators then met with Barnicle to discuss the allegations and after the situation continued, the Student Senate moved to impeach Barnicle. The decision was based on these complaints that consisted of harassment, among other things.
After the Nov. 1 Student Senate meeting, a "last chance agreement" was drawn up based on the promise Barnicle's past behaviors would be corrected. Student Senate said Barnicle continued with the same behaviors.
Barnicle said,"I was under the impression that there was an agreement. I kept my agreement. Senate did not."
Barnicle's resignation was accepted on November 8 and he was escorted out of the Senate office after cleaning his desk out.
Barnicle said, "Senate chose to accept the agreement, but they did not let the student body know. They did it behind closed doors."
Barnicle also said that "everything that the Senate is working on, I am behind. The rewriting of the Constitution started over the summer. Every major concept or idea, they don't feel like they're getting credit. A lot of this stems from that jealousy and that is unfortunate."
"I was passionate about Senate. I had hundreds of hours into different projects: the textbook rental program, the computer services committee, etc. But I was happy with what I accomplished in the short time I was in office."
Barnicle joined the Senate to make some significant changes and to leave a legacy that would have an impact not just this year, but in the coming years.
New Vice President, Chris Box said, "We've always wanted things to work out. There was no pressure to remove him; it was to be a solution."
Barnicle has not stopped his fight yet. He seeking students who are willing to sign a petition against the Student Senators that raises questions about their tactics to impeach Barnicle.
