Go-getter students who push for their high marks earned the opportunity to become part of the community college level honor society.
About 65 people were inducted into the Phi Pi Chapter of Phi Theta Kappa or PTK at Lorain County Community College on Nov. 18. The ceremony, which took place in the Spitzer Conference Center, started at 6 p.m. and was followed by a buffet dinner at 7 p.m.
PTK is the two-year community college international scholastic honor society. There are chapters at over 600 colleges and universities nationwide, according to George Vourlojianis, assistant professor of history at LCCC. He is the adviser for PTK.
Linda Doering, PTK president, has spent a few weeks conducting new member orientations explaining the benefits of joining PTK. Doering said, there are certain scholarships that are only available to PTK members.
PTK has community service projects like picking up litter on and around the campus of LCCC for Project Green to collecting books and food for Feed a Mind, Feed a Body. They are also making and selling ornaments. The money from the sales of the ornaments will be donated to Genesis House.
The Society has about 65-100 members, of which about 20 are active.
The requirements for membership are having completed at least 12 credit hours, two letters of recommendations, and a grade point average of 3.25 or higher.
There's more information about PTK by contacting Linda Doering via email at president@ptkphipi.org.
