Despite recent events, Student Senate is steaming ahead and has been continuing the projects started before the Barnicle debacle.
The ripple effect caused by Barnicle's resignation has created a new order in the student senate. Former vice president Marcus Madison will now be the president. Chris Box was appointed to be the vice president. The executive secretary, financial secretary, and event coordinator stayed the same with Kristie Benson, Anthony Haslage, and Jessica Reese, respectively.
The open seat on the student senate is the University Partnership representative. Student senate will open the process for people to apply for this position.
"I look forward to actually working and getting some things done," said Madison. "There is going to be more focus on committees. The appropriations committee, event planning, and document evaluation committees are the main focus."
The event planning committee will plan events for the students providing different viewpoints for students.
The document evaluation committee will focus on updating the Constitution and for updating the election packets for the spring. As it stands now, these packets and the Constitution contradict each other. The new election packets will, hopefully, be completed in time for the next election.
"We have a student leader network meeting that's open to students all across the campus. We're going to really try to get them in the room, getting people to understand different backgrounds, getting people to communicate, just get them to clash some way or another and also work on their leadership enhancement skills," said Madison.
The Student Senate hopes to reach out to the College 101 classes by next semester. They plan to extend coverage to include more Early College and non-traditional students. LCCC Student Senate has already seen some of this taking place. The University Partnership has already started some new clubs.
Another idea that they are trying to get off the ground is the Computer Services Committee. The group is in the first stages of trying to find out if students would want tech support for their computers available at the school. Money that students would waste at computer stores would be saved at the college. Students would only have to pay for parts. They are hoping to collect at least 500 surveys, available in the Senate office, to find out if students will take advantage of this project.
Reese said," We have a new open door policy up here in the Student Senate office now. Our door is always open. Anytime anyone needs anything, they can just walk right in. If we're here, we will help them with anything they need."
This newest edition of the Student Senate is looking to continue with some of the challenges and projects that started at the beginning of the year. They have dubbed their new campaign, "The New Frontier."
