Senate intends to move forward

Issue date: 12/11/06 Section: News
Senate members Marcus Madison and Anthony Haslage disputed the legitimacy of a petition which threatens to have them removed from office, as they defended themselves against allegations from former Student Senate President Daniel Darnicle that they unfairly removed him from office, harbor personal biases against him and represent an incompetent administration.
Currently, there is a debate as to whether the petition to overturn the Student Senate, for which Barnicle is gathering signatures, is authorized under the Student Constitution. Financial Secretary Anthony Haslage said that the petition is not constitutionaly legitimate.
"He can recall one person per petition," Haslage said. "But he's not trying to recall one individual, he's trying to recall the entire group...he did not read the section apparently."
"If he's trying to become president again, he would have to remove Marcus," Haslage continued, "and then, there would be a recall election; at which point, the students would be allowed to vote for the new president. This is assuming that the signatures on the petition are valid."
"Right now, what he's doing does not fall under anything that we or the college have," Haslage said.
Student Senate President Marcus Madison expressed concern that many students who have signed the petition were not aware of what they were signing.
"We are aware that some individuals are under the assumption that they are signing something, but they don't know exactly what they are signing," Madison said. "If you're signing the petition, then that's great...you know, it's our democratic process and that's the greatest thing about it. But just make sure that you are aware; people should have the right to know exactly what they are signing."
"If anyone signed a petition that they feel uncomfortable with, and want to remove their names from that petition, they are more than welcome to contact the Student Senate or Student Life," Madison said. "You can contact us at 366-7650."
