Early bird parking spot hunters may want to reset their alarm clocks.

Think parking is a nightmare now? Just wait until April. That is when construction of the new Library and Community Resource Center will begin. Bids for the first phase of construction were due Feb. 7 and work should start the first week of April.

According to Physical Plant Director Robert Flyer, the new building will be "in the open area adjacent to the College Center near where the loading docks are." The parking lots next to the Physical Education building will be partially closed during construction. Flyer says that this is why the new parking was built. Construction for the new library will take about fifteen months and should open for the fall 2008 semester.

The new library will replace the current one that was built in 1975. Library Director Keith Washburn stated that "technological changes over three decades have made the current building inadequate." Also, with enrollment exceeding 10,000 students, the existing library lacks study spaces, especially those that accommodate groups.

Lorain County Community College's future library will feature 22 small study spaces, half of which will be enclosed. Along with the smaller study spaces, there will be two larger spaces for groups. Washburn explained that there will be ". . . a larger area for videographic instruction and a separate area for classes."

To accommodate both current and new technology, the new library will feature raised floors with wiring and cables to run underneath the floors and out of sight. Flyer said that the new library will be fully wireless. According to Washburn, the number of computers available for use will be double the current number.

Washburn referred to the new Library as "the Library and Community Resource Center" since LCCC's library will only occupy the second and third floor. He explained that the first floor will be the new home for the Connections Center and Financial Services office, describing this portion as the "Student Services Suite." The new building will also feature a branch of the Elyria Public Library, complete with a children's area and a fireplace. Washburn hopes that this branch ". . . will draw in more of the public and serve the community better."
