An evening tornado warning March 14 sent about 30 people into the College Center Mall basement. The vortex was spotted by a local law official, TV reports said, however, it did not show up on radar.

About 7:30 p.m. the twister touched down just west of Elyria near Midway Mall, causing damage for about a mile before dissipating, according to Shawn Foucher's story in the March 15 edition of the Chronicle-Telegram. According to the story, the National Weather Association identified the vortex as a tornado.

Around 7:45 p.m., when the weather alert was announced, members of Lorain County Community College security staff asked people in College Center to go to the basement until the danger had passed.

A young woman waiting for the bus said she was confused as to what to do after Security staff asked her to go downstairs. The woman moved away from the front doors of CC Mall and stepped behind one of the wooden signs, so she could watch for her bus.

Employment and Career Specialist, Cyndi McCabe was conducting the Networking session for the Job Search Assistance Workshops. She started the workshop in CC 227 A at 7 p.m. just before the storm started.

"Security asked us to move to the basement, so we left everything and went downstairs," McCabe said. After settling down at a table near the TERC lab, the group agreed to pressing on with the session.

"They gave up their time to come here, and they were very interested in the job search process, so we just kept going." McCabe said. "It was the most interesting experience I've had as a facilitator,"

The weather warning expired at 8:15 p.m. LCCC Security Staff sounded the all clear a few moments later.

The storms continued east, creating tornado warning in parts of Cleveland and Parma.

The warm 60-degree temperatures on March 13 and 14 collided with colder temps spawning a line of storm that passed through the area Wednesday, according to the National Weather Service at noaa.gov.

Staying safe during a tornado warning at LCCC

LCCC Campus Services has a webpage through the college's web portal that explains what to do during a tornado warning. According to the webpage, folks should stay indoors; go to a tunnel or basement area. Then take cover under a desk or a table and wrap themselves in a coat for added protection. The webpage said to keep away from glass objects such as mirrors and windows.

Tornado procedures are posted in the LCCC campus buildings. More information can be found at www.lorainccc.edu.
