Students on campus for afternoon classes Tuesday witnessed a major power outage that left six cities without power.

According to Ohio Edison officials, power went out around 2:20 P.M., and wasn't fully returned until 5 p.m.

During that time, Lorain County Community College was left without power as students roamed the dim lit halls to find that their classes had been cancelled.

The outage, which was rumored to be the result of an overload of air conditioners, was actually caused by faulty wiring at a fairly major substation. The power failure eventually fed into other substations, spanning out to neighboring cities.

While the remainder of the city regained power around 5 p.m., LCCC campus remained powerless until 8 p.m.

LCCC Vice President David Cummings related the delay to power line failure along the railroad tracks.

According to Ohio Edison spokesman Mark Durbin, the power outage affected 29,000 homes and buildings in parts of Elyria, Lorain, North Ridgeville, Oberlin, Columbia Station, and North Olmsted.

Ohio Edison crews rerouted circuits to get the power back on, and will be repairing the failed substation this week.
