Most people would be concerned if they knew four dean positions were open at the beginning of a new school year. At Lorain County Community College, people do not have to worry. The four open dean positions are for Engineering Technologies, Science and Mathematics, Allied Health and Nursing, and Social Sciences. All the dean positions were interim positions that needed to be filled with a permanent position. The dean for Engineering Technologies was Duncan Estep. The interim dean for Allied Health and Nursing was Hope M. Moon, Dr. John Crooks, the interim dean for Science and Mathematics has become assistant provost. The dean for Social Sciences was Dorinda Smith. Human Resources appoints a seven-person committee, which then decides who the new deans will be. The committees are ahead of schedule because they usually start looking for candidates in January, but have started the search earlier. Director of Human Resources Terry Robinson said he hopes to have the positions filled by September 2008, or as early as summer 2008. Robinson said "There are only 27 administrators on the LCCC campus. We are pretty proud of that. Most schools are top heavy." Each applicant applies online and needs to meet four criteria. They need academic credentials, preferably a doctorate, a complete application with resume and professional statement, an interview process and a teaching demonstration. "[The teaching demonstration] is the most revealing in the whole process," Robinson explained. "It should cause the desire and the intellect in you to move." The Human Resources Department has a link on LCCC's Web site labeled Employment Opportunities so anyone can know what positions are available. Once there are applicants, the reviewing process begins, and the positions begin to fill up.
