The switch, initiated by Bob Bohn, plant operations supervisor, was made because the old C-fold towels tended to come out in large quantities and end up as waste on the floor.
The new towels are a "Green Seal" product, and are made of 40% - 80% recycled-content. Because of their rolling dispenser, they tend to produce less waste when students grab for the towels.
"The end result [of the change], will be at least a 7% reduction in wasted paper towels and an estimated $9,000 per year in savings," said Director of Physical Plant Services, Bob Flyer.
While all the supplies are on campus, the Physical Plant expects to have the switch completed within the semester. The project consists of changing nearly 300 paper towel dispensers across campus.
Green Seal is a national independent non-profit organization promoting environmentally friendly products that cause less pollution, reduce waste, and conserve resources.
The project quickly gained interest from LCCC President Dr. Roy Church, and the Operation's Council. "Any time we can offer improved service, and improved environmental conditions, and save some money [Dr. Church] becomes very interested in it," said Flyer.
