Lorain County Community College has not made any significant changes to its security policy, but there are major options that are being evaluated.
"We are looking at quotes on an external alert system and that's being offered by American Signal," Interim Security Director Keith Brown said. That system has already been tested. He also mentioned that security is looking into a text messaging alert system that will be used by students and teachers.
When asked about the cost involved Brown replied, "I've spoken to several vendors and gotten estimates of any where between $23,000 per yer year and $1.50 per student per year.
The vendor Brown is most interested in is E2 Campus but he explained, "It's not my decision." E2 Campus advised Brown that only a portion of students will register and LCCC is estimating approximatly 5,000 registrations.
Some of the companies offering the text messaging service are E2 Campus, 21st Century Communications, Message One and Leader Alert. E2 Campus is a popular choice for this system since the Virginia Tech tragedy.
When the new library is open and operational it will be integrated into the current security system. When asked about the increase in personnel needed for the new building, Brown replied, "We will ask to hire at least three additional officers."
As for the already extensive camera system the new building will be incorporated comparably. When asked about the amount of cameras needed to compensate, he said, "Without getting into too much detail, over 30, bringing the total on campus to about 200 internal and external."
