Planning for 2015

Issue date: 11/7/07 Section: News
Lorain County Community College is embarking on a new strategic visioning process that will eventually bring more students and a number of new buildings to campus.

The process, called Vision 2015, set specific goals for the campus and the surrounding community to reach within the next eight years. Some of those goals have to do with educational attainment levels while others are centered on developing local area business.

Vision 2015 follows Vision 21, a similar process which defined goals and initiatives set during a 1996-1998 visioning process. To date 85 percent of the Vision 21 goals have been met.

The process is guided by LCCC President Dr. Roy Church and the Vision 2015 council, which is comprised of both college and community members.

During the last 25 years, Lorain County has been involved in a transformation of the economy, shifting focus from a traditional manufacturing based economy to an environment where acquired skills and services are valued.

"We've seen a tremendous change in the nature of work and consequently a tremendous change in the nature of preparation people need for work," related Dr. Church.

While the state of Ohio ranked 39th in a poll for higher education in all the states, Lorain County has continued to rank low in a state that already has education problems. This poor showing of educational achievement prompted LCCC to adopt the University Partnership program in 1995 which has been growing and expanding for more than 10 years.

The campus hosts 11,000 associate students and 3,000 bachelors or graduate students. The partnership program offers 27 bachelor's degrees and 13 master's with "…a bachelor's degree offered in almost every major area," explained Church.

In addition, the Vision 2015 process also calls for substantial renovation of the LCCC campus. As enrollment continues to grow, school officials plan to expand the campus with buildings that fit student's needs. "Within the next 5 years we have a domino effect of construction projects," Church said. "We are concentrating on providing the facilities that are most critical to a collegiate environment."
