Szabo is a competitive figure skater. He's been skating since he was five, but started skating in competitions when he was nine. After his mom, Janice Szabo, enrolled him in swimming lessons and gymnastics, he realized at age seven that skating was what he loved. Shows at King's Island in Cincinnati were his major inspirations.
Szabo won first place in the 2006 Eastern Great Lakes Regional Championships in Cleveland for the interim level, which were in 2005. This year, he won fourth place for the novice level, which is the next step up from interim. He's attending sectionals in Rochester, MI on Nov. 14, and said he eventually hopes to move up to collegiates.
The main thing that separates Szabo from other skaters his age is that he is still in school. He is taking 13 credits of Post Secondary Option classes through LCCC and Tri-C. His LCCC classes are online, and his Tri-C classes are at the campus, so he only has to drive to one campus from his home in Richfield.
"Distance learning has been a big help," said Szabo. "I practice in Indianapolis, so it's really easy for me to do my homework when I'm not around campus."
Szabo goes to Indianapolis for training one or two days every month, usually on the weekends.
Szabo said he didn't want to limit himself to only skating, and although he would be further in his skating if he wasn't in school, he feels that he is ahead in everyday life
Szabo is working towards a degree in photography. He will receive his Associates of Art in the spring, and will continue on to the University of Akron next fall.
