Why Can't We Be Friends?

Dear Democrats running for President
As I arrive home from work and took a seat on my couch, I remembered that I recorded the Democratic Debate on CNN this past Thursday. I got excited because I do consider myself a Democrat and I was also very interested to see what these seven candidates had to say about the present Bush administration.
What I was shocked to see in the opening 15 minutes of the debate was that some of the candidates were attacking each other verbally. Now I do understand that this is a competition and in order to win all candidates believe they need to look better than their opponents, but what I was witnessing on my TV was an all out bashing your colleague extravaganza.
Two candidates in particular attacked one candidate verbally because they both believe that this was one of their last chances to gain some ground before primaries. Senators Barack Obama and John Edwards found it appropriate to lash out on Hillary Clinton.
It took roughly 10 to 15 minutes for other candidates such as Senator Chris Dodd to interrupt and say "We Democrats have a job to do, unite this party." I believe that Mr. Dodd hit the nail right on the head.
Why were three Democrats fighting against each other when the real opponents were not even in attendance at this debate? The reason for the primaries and debates is for party members to join together and accept that one co-worker is better for the job than the others.
There was absolutely no reason for this feud. All the candidates needed to do was address their point of views on the issues and "keep it all in the family," the Democratic family that is. So to you readers who happen to be Democrats and missed the debate, have no fear, because the next two hours and 15 minutes of the debate was smooth sailing.
The remaining time during the debate, not a single candidate fought, except maybe Kucinich on every issue.
This is the point of the debate: make everyone in your party look good. We all know that regardless if you are a Republican or Democrat, everyone in your party has the overall same vague opinion on almost every issue. So do us all a favor, Democratic candidates, and sing a little song to yourself, "Why can't we be friends, why can't we friends?"
Your Loyal Democrat,
James Elliott
