Too old for Shirley Temples? Need a mixed drink for the designated driver? Then come to the Sixth Annual Lorain County Zero-Proof Mix-Off Event planned for Thursday Dec. 6 for inspiration.

According to LCCC Dean of Health, Physical Education, and Recreation Laurie Carlberg, this annual event began about five years ago as part of a state-wide effort to reduce alcohol related accidents. "The Lorain County General Health District initiated contact with LCCC to bring this event here," Carlberg said.

Carlberg said that the year before LCCC's first Mix-Off event, Cuyahoga Community College had a similar successful event. "This showed that you don't have to drink to enjoy the holidays. There are other ways to celebrate the holidays," Carlberg said.

Weather won't be as much of an issue this year, since, according to flyers announcing the event, an alternative date of Dec. 7 has been selected. "This is the first year with a snow date because last year's event had to be cancelled," Carlberg said.

To help advertise the event and to bring home the message that holiday hosts should offer non-alcoholic alternatives, the Ohio Highway Patrol has brought a pick-up truck that was damaged in an alcohol related accident. Carlberg said that the state troopers bring the most recent vehicle involved in an accident caused by a drunk driver.

The Mix-Off offers the opportunity for 20 teams to demonstrate their mixology skills for prizes such as the People's Choice and Judge's Choice.

Carlberg said, "There were no winners last year because the event had to be cancelled." Winners from the previous year, according to Paulanne Oakes' article in the Collegian last year, were "Chocolate-Strawberry Heaven" (People's Choice) made by Elyria High School's Teen Institute and "Flying Wheel Java Express" (Judge's Choice) presented by the Ohio Highway Patrol.
