The late notification of Lorain County Community College's closing on Feb 11 was the result of a last minute decision but the administration is working on more ways to give students a timely notification, according to Interim Security Director Keith Brown.

The late notice of the school closing resulted in some frustrated students arriving on campus only to find that classes had been

According to Brown the number of people that arrived at the school is unknown.

One of the potential solutions to the communication problem with students is a text messaging system that has been in planning stages. In addition to providing emergency alerts it will also send notifications for the closing of campus.

"Text messaging is not a cure-all, but the key is to find ways to get that information out sooner," Brown said.

An external alert system to notify students outside of the buildings to important information is another solution.

Addressing the concerns of students who still can't commute when campus is open he said, "This is a college and we have a duty to provide [quality educational resources] with as few interruptions as possible."

Brown explained that college students can and should make their own decision about attending classes.

"An actual lack of attendance can be a factor in closing campus", said Brown.

He said that a pandemic resulting in the absence of a large amount of students or faculty could potentially result in canceled classes after consulting with local health organizations.

Any other reasons for a large absence would be considered on a case-to-case basis.
