After four years in planning, an emergency response team made up of campus employees will soon be formed to coordinate students in emergency situations, according to Interim Security Director Keith Brown.

Employees of Lorain County Community College can now volunteer for training in a team designed to coordinate emergency procedures on campus as a supplement to security and the physical plant, Brown said.

While military, medical or law experience is preferred, Brown explained that everyone will be accepted. "We won't turn anyone away," Brown said.

While student involvement isn't mentioned in the college's weekly bulletin, Brown says that students can be accepted as well.

Brown cited several instances on our campus that students aided in emergency situations, and the effect Virginia Tech's student-run EMT had on the tragedy there, as examples of the benefit well trained students can have at LCCC.

When asked what size he hopes the team will grow to, Brown replied, "As many people as possible, at least one person per building."

Brown says that he thought of the idea for the team when training for a similar program off campus. "I thought it would be good for our campus," Brown said.

Brown drafted the idea in 2004 but says, "It was good but never good enough."

Brown explains that the text messaging system and the external alert system brought the plan back to light by enabling better mobilization for the team. "The time was right," Brown said.

As of March 12, nine people have expressed interest in joining the program.
